Throughout my life I have had some pretty amazing life experiences. I have played in championship hockey games, seen wildernesses that are remote and untouched, traveled the world, lived abroad, skied the Austrian Alps and dove with manta rays and sharks. An experience I am going to have to add to this list is interning at REI and experiencing all Seattle has to offer. Continue reading

I am an eight year veteran of the United States Army. I served my country as a Forward Observer during two tours – in Iraq and Afghanistan. I am a senior at the University of Arizona and will be graduating December 2016 with a B.S. in Retailing and Consumer Sciences. This summer I’m working as a Merchandising/Buying intern at REI’s corporate headquarters in Kent, WA.

As my internship winds down to its final stretch I am seeing a date on my calendar grow closer and closer. The date is July 28th, and it’s not only my sister’s birthday but the day I will be presenting the many hours of work and data I have compiled during the time I have been here to my supervisors. When I stepped into the University of Arizona (U of A) I had one goal in mind, find a degree that will teach me skills I can actually use. After spending the last two summers interning at two different companies, I am very happy with my degree choice. Continue reading

What a feeling! I am one of the lucky ones. I feel like there are people that go through their whole life attempting to find what they are passionate about. As a non-traditional student, I was one of them until this summer. Continue reading

When this summer began I told myself that I would always pursue opportunities even if it caused me to have to operate outside of my comfort zone. Not knowing all of the process and procedures that come with the role I hold here at REI, I at times find myself walking a thin line. See, I have been given a project that has allowed me to work with some level of ambiguity, and with that ambiguity comes the unknown. Continue reading

I thought it would be a nice change of pace this week to go into a bit of my experience of getting accustomed to living in a city I had never even visited prior to my arrival at the end of May. Of course like anything you do for the first time, there are a bevy of emotions involved. You have the excitement and trepidation of the unknown, the general thought of how you think it will be as well as the uncomfortable notion that nothing is going to be familiar. Continue reading

What makes an experience unique, meaningful and rewarding? To me it’s the challenges that come with it. I think a lot of people only focus on the results of different objectives. As I began to head down the path of learning how to become a productive, efficient and effective merchant, I constantly remind myself to enjoy the journey.  Yes, I would love to have a very positive result to my summer’s work here at REI.  I will absolutely keep the end game in mind, but if I just focus on the result I may miss out on the adventure that comes with the journey. As my second week at REI concludes I have finally begun to get acclimated to my surroundings.  My week began with a meeting with my category merchandising manager (CMM).  The meeting laid out the project that will consume a good portion of my time throughout the summer.  As he started describing the objectives and expected results I found myself starting to clam up a bit.  I felt my comfort zone totally disappear.  The realization quickly sat in that this was going to be one of the most challenging mental endeavors I have had to undertake. Walking into the office for the first time brought to the surface an array of emotions that reminded me of the feeling I had as a freshman walking into high school or college for the first time.

Not knowing what the Seattle traffic was going to be like, I left my living quarters hours before I was due to arrive at work. This only added to my uneasiness, because I arrived at work over an hour early. Continue reading

Today marks the beginning of my next great adventure. I thought it would be appropriate to start this blog by providing a bit of background on my past and how I found myself riding life’s wave to REI’s corporate headquarters in Kent, Washington.

In 2005, when I started a career as a Forward Observer in the United States Army, I had a plan. I wanted to serve my country for four years, and then utilize the G.I. Bill to continue my education and achieve a Bachelor degree. Continue reading
