Student internships are an important part of a student’s development in and understanding of the retailing industry. Each summer, a vast majority of the program’s students go out into the field – in corporate offices and stores – and learn from the pros. These are their stories.

As I prepare to tackle my third week at Macy’s, I am realizing just how much the TJLC and RCSC major has set me up for success.  This week I am thankful for all of the opportunities I have been given as an RCSC student; I am so proud to tell everyone I meet that I am a  retail student at the TJLC. So, there are two things I would like to stress to my fellow students: don’t underestimate the value of your education and brand yourself! I am a senior at The University of Arizona studying Retailing and Consumer Sciences with a minor in Business Administration. I am also a coordinator for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Peer Mentor program. This summer I am a store management intern with Macy’s at the Biltmore Fashion Park in sunny Phoenix. When I’m not at home with my dachshunds, you can find me daydreaming about the beach or waiting in line at the nearest Starbucks for a trenta peach green tea.

After hearing the term ‘Sneakerhead’ for years, I always assumed that I had a pretty good understanding of what exactly that meant and who sneakerheads really were.  Yet as I quickly discovered, I had a lot to learn!  My first three weeks of working in the Jordan Brand for Nike has opened my eyes to a whole new world and a completely different kind of consumer.  When I first received news that I would be working with Jordan’s Retro brand footwear with a focus on the North American marketplace for the summer, I was overjoyed.  I could not be more excited! Initially though I had some nerves. As a runner (or in my case, a jumper) I have always had a profound love for shoes.  With that being said, by no means was I deserving of the title, Sneakerhead. I’m also a full time student athlete competing in the pole vault, a member of the TJLC’s Student Advisory Board and a student leader for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. My first week at Macy’s was nothing short of amazing!  I am assigned to the Ready to Wear (RTW) department, which consists of nearly the entire second floor of our store.  The Ready to Wear department includes women’s fashions such as: Ralph Lauren, INC, Alfani, Free People, Lucky, Eileen Fisher, Vince Camuto, BCBG, Sanctuary and Michael Kors among many others.  My mentor, Adrienne, has worked at Macy’s for 15 years in various management and non-management positions.  She is currently the RTW Sales Manager at the Biltmore.  We work really well together and everyday we learn something new about one another.  Last week I was able to participate in a store “Deep Dive” and work during a huge sale day. What makes an experience unique, meaningful and rewarding? To me it’s the challenges that come with it. I think a lot of people only focus on the results of different objectives. As I began to head down the path of learning how to become a productive, efficient and effective merchant, I constantly remind myself to enjoy the journey.  Yes, I would love to have a very positive result to my summer’s work here at REI.  I will absolutely keep the end game in mind, but if I just focus on the result I may miss out on the adventure that comes with the journey. I am an eight year veteran of the United States Army. I served my country as a Forward Observer during two tours – in Iraq and Afghanistan. I am a senior at the University of Arizona and will be graduating December 2016 with a B.S. in Retailing and Consumer Sciences. This summer I’m working as a Merchandising/Buying intern at REI’s corporate headquarters in Kent, WA.

As I sat and unpacked in my new home for the next eight weeks, I realized that I felt a lot like I did my first night without my parents as a freshman at the University of Arizona.  I was unsure of what was in store for me as one of the interns at Macy’s.  I was nervous to be in a new city and also very excited to get things going.  I reminded myself of why I took this leap of faith.  Why I decided to move in with my best friend for eight weeks in a city I had only ever visited a few times.  I reminded myself of how much I loved Macy’s.  And, I also realized how lucky I felt to be chosen as one of their summer interns.  That night I didn’t sleep much, but I knew I had to be up early to start my next adventure. As my second week at REI concludes I have finally begun to get acclimated to my surroundings.  My week began with a meeting with my category merchandising manager (CMM).  The meeting laid out the project that will consume a good portion of my time throughout the summer.  As he started describing the objectives and expected results I found myself starting to clam up a bit.  I felt my comfort zone totally disappear.  The realization quickly sat in that this was going to be one of the most challenging mental endeavors I have had to undertake. After finishing my first 40-hour workweek as a full time Nike employed intern, it has been a whirl wind of ‘getting to know you’ opportunities. The past two weeks in Oregon have been filled to the brim with new introductions. These introductions have come in many different facets. Not only have I been meeting and making connections with my manager, co-workers and fellow interns, but I have also been introduced to the city, the culture of Oregon and all things Nike.

Initially, I am timid to say that when the day came on Monday, May 30th to get on the plane and travel to Oregon for the start of this next grand adventure in my life, I had succumbed to overwhelming nerves.  At first I was very embarrassed.  In the past few months since I had received the exciting news that I had been selected to be a 2016 Merchandising Intern for Nike, I had been filled with overwhelming joy.  So why did I suddenly have a pit in my stomach?  Deep down in the week leading up to the internship, there was a single query that had popped into my head and rattled around in my thoughts.  Continue reading

Walking into the office for the first time brought to the surface an array of emotions that reminded me of the feeling I had as a freshman walking into high school or college for the first time.

Not knowing what the Seattle traffic was going to be like, I left my living quarters hours before I was due to arrive at work. This only added to my uneasiness, because I arrived at work over an hour early. Continue reading

Today marks the beginning of my next great adventure. I thought it would be appropriate to start this blog by providing a bit of background on my past and how I found myself riding life’s wave to REI’s corporate headquarters in Kent, Washington.

In 2005, when I started a career as a Forward Observer in the United States Army, I had a plan. I wanted to serve my country for four years, and then utilize the G.I. Bill to continue my education and achieve a Bachelor degree. Continue reading
